KANANASKIS, Alberta – Great golf in the Canadian Rockies is easily found in Kananaskis, Alberta. Specifically, one of the best golf courses to book a golf vacation while in Canada is at Kananaskis Country Golf Course’s Mt. Kidd design, which is one of two 18-hole courses – And from the fourth tee box here, it is obvious the hole is one of the best in Canada.

The hole features an elevated tee shot to a green set between a pair of mountains off in the distance, while the Kananaskis River runs along the right side. It is like a mix of the Rockies and Florida, minus the stifling humidity of the Orange State.

Another fantastic hole in the Alberta, Canada golf paradise is the Mt. Lorette design’s sixth hole, a great, water-heavy par 3 with its own stunning mountain backdrop.

There have been grizzly sightings on the fairways due to Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s recommendation to move the golf course from its originally intended location on the other side of the valley. Jones took a helicopter tour of the area before construction, and said they had found the wrong place for the golf course. When he saw the opposite side of the valley, he noticed the river and better mountain backdrops, so the course was built there instead after the Canadian government permitted the change.

Kananaskis Country Golf Course – A Local Favorite in Alberta, Canada

In Alberta, Kananaskis Country Golf Course’s Mt. Kidd and Mt. Lorette layouts are both named after the mountain peaks that impose upon the local backgrounds. Both are a championship standard with four sets of tees. The back sets plays more than 7,000 yards.

Mt. Lorette is more water-heavy and more of a shot-makers golf course, while Mt. Kidd is a bit friendlier to the occasional mis-hit shot.

While the masses come to Banff Springs from all over the world, Kananaskis, Alberta is lesser known, and conveniently closer to Calgary – about a 60-minute drive – so it is more popular with locals, especially with more affordable prices, and slightly cheaper than Banff Springs, Stewart Creek and Silvertip. Alberta residents receive a discount with ID.

Despite the fact Kananaskis’ golf courses are less popular, book in advance, as tee sheets stay pretty full. Kananaskis is the best value in Alberta’s Canadian Rockies – so book a golf vacation here!
