Best Golf Courses in West Kootenay for Beginners

Castlegar Golf Club

This West Kootenay golf course has a good mix of elevated tees, greens, and wide fairways that will suit low-handicappers and beginners alike. If you’re lucky you might even spot some deer or elk! The practice facility will allow you to warm up your game before trying the championship course. Private and semi-private lessons are available, as well as spring junior classes for children aged 6-13 at any skill level.

Balfour Golf Course

This golf course is naturally a bit hilly so you’ll have to be patient as you adjust to the terrain. The views are breathtaking. With four different t-boxes, you’ll have no trouble finding a length that suits a beginner. You may want to take a cart for the back nine because of the hilly terrain, unless you’re up for the climb up and down the mountainside. The rates for this golf course are also reasonable, especially if you are a casual player.

Balfour also offers golf instruction and coaching with a pro instructor.

Christina Lake Golf Course

Minutes from its namesake, also known as the warmest lake in Canada, the Christina Lake Golf Course is considered to be one of the top 25 golf courses in British Columbia.

This is a pretty straightforward course where it’s hard to lose a ball. If you play down the middle and avoid bunkers, you shouldn’t get into too much trouble.

The 9th hole is the signature hole at Christina Lake, a par-3. The green is protected by two sand traps, but first you have to contend with the tee shot, which is a carry over the pond to the green. It is possible to shoot a birdie on this hole, but taking an extra club can’t hurt as it is clear sailing past the pin.

Christina Lake also runs a junior program in May and June that allows youth to develop their golf skills.
